Finnair Expands Codeshare with American Airlines, Enhancing Connections to Mexico

Finnair and American Airlines are set to launch a codeshare partnership starting January 23, 2025, offering connections to 12 Mexican destinations. This collaboration includes American Airlines’ flights from its Dallas-Fort Worth hub to several key locations in Mexico, such as Guanajuato, Monterrey, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Cancún, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Mérida, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Querétaro, and San José del Cabo.

Dallas-Fort Worth serves as a crucial hub for American Airlines and is also a destination for Finnair. Currently, Finnair operates daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth during the winter season. For the summer of 2025, Finnair plans to increase its capacity to up to 11 flights per week.

Fredrik Wildtgrube, Finnair’s Senior Vice President of Alliances and Airline Partnerships, highlighted the benefits of the cooperation, stating, “The cooperation opens up a comprehensive choice of destinations for our customers to Mexico, which is a popular travel destination from Finland and elsewhere in Northern Europe, especially during the winter. Besides Mexico, American Airlines offers our customers excellent connections via Dallas also to elsewhere in the United States and America.”

Under this codeshare agreement, Finnair passengers can travel the entire route under a Finnair flight number and earn Avios for their journeys. These codeshare flights, operated by American Airlines and its subsidiary Envoy Air, will be available for purchase starting January 13, 2025.

Anmol Bhargava, American Airlines’ Vice President of Partnerships, expressed enthusiasm for the expanded cooperation: “We are happy to offer Finnair customers smoother access to popular destinations in Mexico. The expansion will give customers more convenient connections on American’s expansive network from Mexico to Finland and beyond.”

This partnership further extends the joint route network already established between Finnair and American Airlines through the Atlantic Joint Business agreement, providing travelers with more options and seamless travel experiences between Europe and the Americas.

Analysis

When I saw the announcement of Finnair’s expanded cooperation with American Airlines to offer smoother connections to Mexico, I was a bit surprised. Warmer destinations like Spain are much closer to Finland and have traditionally been more popular with Finnish travelers. However, post-pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in passenger preferences, with many seeking new and unique destinations rather than revisiting the same old spots.

This trend is not isolated to Finnair. For example, United Airlines recently announced new service to Mongolia, catering to this growing appetite for more diverse travel experiences. Finnair’s codeshare agreement with American Airlines is a strategic and cost-effective way to broaden its network without directly operating the flights.

For context, a codeshare agreement allows the marketing carrier (the airline selling the ticket) to place its flight code on a flight operated by a different airline, in this case, American Airlines. This partnership offers Finnair customers more destination options while maintaining the convenience of a single booking and the ability to earn avios points.

Moreover, Finnair’s increased flight frequencies to Dallas-Fort Worth will likely make these connections to Mexican destinations more seamless, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
