American Airlines Introduces Mobility Tags

American Airlines became the first US airline to issue mobility tags for passengers with mobility devices such as wheelchairs.

These new mobility tags were developed internally at American’s technology department (most likely at Skyview). The tags feature useful information like how many items were taken into the cabin, battery type, & trip itinerary information.

These new tags replace manual tags across most airports on the American Airlines network including American Eagle.

American says these tags should help improve the handling of mobility devices as this information will be made available to team members through existing devices. American says they’ve already noted a 13% improvement in the handling rate of mobility devices.

“American is committed to improving the travel experience for our customers who use wheelchairs and mobility devices,” said Julie Rath, American’s Senior Vice President of Airports, Reservations and Service Recovery. “Streamlining the check-in and tagging process is an industry-leading effort that will help us further improve how we handle wheelchairs for our customers who entrust us to transport their devices on their journey.”

Analysis

American Airlines is the latest US airline aiming to improve the travel experience for passengers with disabilities. Delta Air Lines for example showcased a new seat design to allow passengers easy access to the aisle.

American meanwhile is taking a more tech-focused approach, which should allow for a customized experience. American Airlines says that it will be adding functionality to the website this functionality allows passengers to input information about mobility devices.

I am excited to see what other tech improvements American Airlines brings to the passenger experience.
